What is Mohs Surgery ?

Mohs surgery is a highly specialized treatment designed for the complete removal of skin cancer. This method differs from all other methods of skin cancer removal because it utilizes thorough microscopic examination of all the tissue that has been surgically removed, while you wait in the comfort of our office. It also employs detailed mapping techniques which permit the Mohs surgeon to remove all the hidden microscopic "roots' and extensions that may accompany a skin cancer.

The procedure begins after the skin has been injected with a local anesthetic to make it completely numb. Then, all of the visible cancer along with a thin margin of normal surrounding skin are removed, carefully mapped, and then examined under a microscope. If there is still any cancer visible under the microscope, another thin layer of skin is removed from that location. This process may then be repeated until the entire skin cancer has been removed.
